Jean-Michel Basquiat American, 1960-1988
The first owner of this work was Stephen Torton, Basquiat’s studio assistant during the crucial years of 1982–83. Torton worked closely with the artist at the height of his early career, helping prepare supports and assisting in the studio during an exceptionally productive period. That direct provenance places the work within Basquiat’s immediate working circle and gives the sheet a particular intimacy.
The composition itself condenses many of Basquiat’s most recognizable strategies: fragmented language, crude figuration, humor, repetition, and imagery drawn from everyday urban life. A skull-like head, a hot dog, wavering lines of steam, and phrases including “PURE,” “ALL BEEF,” “WORLD,” and “FAMOUS” are crowded together on an irregular support, giving the work the immediacy of a note, sign, advertisement, or spontaneous visual thought.
The repeated use of the word “FAMOUS” is especially resonant. Basquiat often isolated familiar words from their ordinary contexts and charged them with new meaning. Here, the language of inexpensive food and commercial promotion becomes intertwined with ideas of value, recognition, and celebrity—subjects that were increasingly relevant as Basquiat himself moved rapidly from the downtown New York scene into the international art world.
The skeletal head introduces another recurring element in Basquiat’s vocabulary. With its exposed teeth and staring eyes, it falls somewhere between cartoon, anatomical diagram, mask, and memento mori. Set beside the imagery of food and consumption, the figure gives the drawing a darker undertone beneath its apparent humor.
With its direct provenance to Stephen Torton, the work offers a particularly immediate glimpse into Basquiat’s creative world. Its rough support, spontaneous lettering, commercial references, and skeletal imagery reveal his ability to turn the ordinary language of the street into a dense, personal system of signs.
